This affix is attached to verb stems to indicate that an event or action is happening for the first time. It is followed by other verb affixes:

| nannugiulauqtuq | he/she kills his/her first polar bear |
| Piitakkunni nirigiulauqtunga. | I ate at Peter's for the first time. |
In the South Qikiqtaaluk dialect -giuq- can be used after stems ending in a vowel or any consonant, except -q. After stems ending in -q, -riuq- is used:
