The affixes -ut, -jut and -rut all express the idea of “an instrument used to…”
uqaala- | to call someone |
uqaalaut | a telephone |
kaapiliuq- | to make coffee |
kaapiliurut | a coffee maker |
ilisai- | to study |
ilisaijjut | a lesson |
Use the following rules when deciding which of the above affixes to use:
If the last syllable of the root has one vowel, delete the last consonant and add -ut |
If the last syllable of the root has two vowels, delete the final consonant and add -jjut |
If the last syllable of the root ends in q, the q changes to r before adding -ut |
Important
If -ut, -jjut, or -rut are followed by any other endings, an i is added to make pronunciation easier:
kaapiliurut + taqaq + qa = | kappiliurutitaqaqqa | Is there a coffee maker? |
titiraut + qaq + qit = | titirautiqaqqit | Do you have a pencil? |
